CGW sixth grader takes first place in 2021 MLK essay contest

A sixth grader at Carter G. Woodson Academy, Bryson Lilly, won the 2021 Unity Breakfast essay contest, whose theme was “Unity: In an Age of Uncertainty.” Seventh grader Jai Kapadia of Morton Middle School was runner-up, and Morton eighth grader Fernando Hislop placed third. Their prizes were $500, $300, and $100, respectively.

Bryson read his entry aloud and recorded it for Lexington's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day event, which is going virtual because of COVID-19 restrictions. The program will air at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, on MeTV (18.2), Spectrum cable channel 186; and at 11 a.m. on WLEX-TV. 

The Alpha Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s Education Foundation sponsors the essay contest, which is open to all Fayette County middle schoolers. For questions, please email Kenneth Jones, director of educational activities.
