SMS Club Information

SMS club information

Hey SMS Families! Please see below for information on clubs that have or are starting virtually soon. We are very excited to get our students involved in some extra-curriculum activities. Even if they have met once, it isn’t too late to join! Click the links below to submit your information. You can also reach out to the sponsor for more details! Go Spartans!

Academic Team:

Mr. Chase Smith is excited to begin another year of Academic Team! If your child enjoys trivia or jeopardy like competition, then look no further than the SMS Academic Team. Using a quick recall (buzz-in) format we compete against other middle schools in Lexington and across central Kentucky. In light of COVID-19, we aren’t completely sure how our matches will look just yet, but we will begin practices very soon. Our team has had great success in the past. Last year, our 6th-grade team placed 3rd in the 6th-grade showcase. Our varsity team earned 2nd place overall in the district and 5th overall in regional competition. If your child is interested, please fill out the Google form for Academic Team. Mr. Smith is looking to have the very first academic team meeting the week of October 12-16. Once you fill out the sign-up google form Mr. Smith will send out a zoom link to parents with a date and time for our first meeting! Looking forward to having many students sign-up!

Book Club:

This Club is similar to "Battle of the Books" and is sponsored by Mrs. Ginger Banks and Mrs. Rebecca Smith. It will be held virtually for the first time on October 19th, at 3 pm. Students will read books that interest them and discuss them as a group. We hope this club promotes more reading at SMS! If you are interested, sign up at this link for Book Club. This can also be found on the SMS webpage under the clubs tab, Battle of the Books

GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance):

This is a student-run club that brings together LGBTQI+ and straight students to support each other, provide a safe place to socialize and create a platform to fight for racial, gender, LGBTQ+, and economic justice. The sponsor for this club is Ms. Sara Davis. If you are interested, please fill out this form for GSA

G.W.C. (Girl Who Code):

This club is sponsored by Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Turbek and was a big hit last year. This is for girls who are interested in coding, which is "the process of using a programming language to get a computer to behave how you want it to. Every line of code tells the computer to do something, and a document full of lines of code is called a script. Each script is designed to carry out a job." If this seems like something your child would be interested in, sign up at this link for G.W.C. This can also be found on the SMS webpage under the Clubs tab, Girls Who Code.

One Way:

This student-led group is Christian-based. For over a decade One Way has encouraged, empowered, and created a sense of family and support among peers. From motivational speakers to outings, bonfires, games, challenges, prayer, and songs, One Way continues to be the bridge that connects students to school and faith. We invite you to join us and invite your friends as we continue growing, learning, giving, and loving every step of the way! Meeting times are Friday’s at 1:30 pm via Zoom! The sponsors for this club are Ms. Stacey McDonald and parent representative Ms. Emily Tillett. If you would like to join fill out the One Way information form

T.S.A. (Technology Student Association):

Has your child ever wanted to belong to an elite group that excels at the region, state, and national levels? This is the organization to join. We want students interested in leadership, engineering, other STEM-related areas, and those who want to learn proper communication skills that are willing to put in the time and effort to be excellent. We want leaders and those who want to learn skills that will help you to be successful in any future career. Our former members include dentists, mining engineers, aviation administrators, business owners, physician assistants, computer programmers, web designers, teachers and that is just to name a few. More general information can be found out about TSA by visiting the National TSA website and the Kentucky TSA website. We will still be able to compete this year whether on-site or virtually. We would love for your child to visit and check out our organization during our first meeting held on October 15 from 3-4 pm. Please fill out this TSA registration form if you are a returning member or interested in becoming a new member.
